The Department of Health (DOH) has been working with the Philippine Red Cross and the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) to ensure that the prisoners and employees of the BJMP who work with COVID-19 are separated and treated.

According to the DOH, 373 inmates were identified in the COVID test of which 195 prisoners were active, including 38 BJMP employees.

The DOH, the World Health Organization and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) have also visited the Correctional Institution for Women in New Bilibid Prison where high numbers of COVID-19 infected inmates have been recorded.

"This is just the beginning for us to conduct targeted testing, provide competent treatment, proper case management to ensure the availability of infection and control measures to prevent the proliferation of cases in penal and correctional facilities," said Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire.

He said, with the assistance of the ICRC, the isolation facilities at New Bilibid Prison will be set up.
