A rights group has praised China's draft rules for treating dogs as "companion animals" or pets instead of livestock or can be eaten.

This is after the coronavirus pandemic that is believed to be from a bat that has been transmitted to other wildlife animals and sold in Wuhan, China for food.

According to the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs in a CBS News report, dogs are no longer considered livestock, meaning they can no longer be cared for for food, milk, fur, medicine or for military or sports purposes .

According to a rights group, this is a decisive step towards ending the dog meat trade in China.

Previously it was banned in the country from selling wild animals for food.
